Hi,

fairly new chicken owner here. We have two extra roosters that we were supposed to sell/cull, but we ended up trying a bachelor flock, which seems to be working fine currently. I think this is thanks to our very calm rooster.

However, he seems so chill that I've started to worry about him a little.

He was a very sweet as a chick too. He would play fight with the others, but as he grew and the fights started to get more serious, he would rather avoid them. He is not a doormat however: the other rooster, that is currently with him, has a more anxious temperament and this led to him biting everyone and everything excessively: other roos (not that uncommon and quite expected) but also hens and humans. He used to be a runt so this seems more like a fear reaction than dominant aggression (and he calms down if you hold him for a while and it has got better overall, otherwise he would've been culled).

When this anxious roo bit our calm rooster for the first time he looked very offended and confused. He made a high pitched "bark" before he attacked him in self-defense. I watched this happen in case I needed to seperate them but they stopped soon enough and the more anxious roo seemed to get humbled. After that they've got along. So in other words the calmer roo never attacks first, and if he can, he will avoid conflict, but he will also stand up for himself if needed.

His puberty has also been very easy. I did notice raise in aggression in him too, but compared to the other roos it was very mild. He started to get those hormonal "aggression/horny bursts" but it didn't happen often, and when it did, he would take it out on food bowls instead of other living beings. You could be moving around him doing whatever and taking for example hay under his feet and he simply didn't care, while the others might have started to feel bothered at some point.

What worries me is that he doesn't seem to be worried about predators either, and when we let him walk on our yard he would just confidently walk everywhere, and for example walk up to my unfamiliar brother with no fear (but also with no aggression). The other two roos are more wary and stay close to me if we are in a new area.

This calm roo is also quite quiet. He does crow but way less than the others. This has always been the case.

Could this be just his temperament or is something wrong with him? He seems healthy otherwise and he is active. So is he just a sweetheart by nature or could he be ill or something?

This is him!

...he also likes to be held to the point he will sometimes jump into your arms himself and then visibly relax when you pet him.

Here is him and the more anxious, but nowadays a bit calmer, roo searching food together:

There are roosters with better temperament than the others. I have a black Australorp rooster that is the biggest bird in the rooster flock and very intelligent, but he is also calm and avoids confrontations whenever he can. I have another rooster that likes to be petted. He will stop in the middle of a hand feeding session and expect to be lightly petted on the chest or receive some wattle massage.

Each rooster has his own personality, if he eats, forages, poops, sleeps and crows normal. I would not worry too much about it.
