Our temps are already reaching the century mark! -pretty normal for this time of year, unfortunately. My flock has plenty of fresh ice water, a fan, and a mister suspended from a tree in the run. (They still lift their wings and pant, but they made it last year so I assume they'll do fine again this year.) I am concerned about my little broody and her 3-day-old chick. They are staying in the coop. The front is open and there are 4 large windows. I have placed a box fan in the front to circulate the air. Will they be o.k. in 98 - 100 degree heat??? I hesitate to intervene and bother them too much, but I am wondering if they should come indoors or stay out. Suggestions from those with more experience and wisdom than me are much appreciated!!

Sounds like you are doing a good job with them to me. Our weather is much the same, and I deal with the heat in much the same way. Haven't lost one to heat yet, but I do worry. And wet the ground down outisde on bad days. I would think the chick would handle the heat better than the hen. I've raised chicks in the coop when the days were getting pretty hot, in June, but not sure they were hitting 100.

-just checked on them and they are scratching, pecking, eating, and drinking. My little bantam hen seems to tolerate the heat much better than my large birds. She isn't panting or lifting her wings. -matter of fact, she was roosting on the ground with her chick hopping all over her and pecking her wattles.

I'm just going to keep an eye on them for now.
