I have a Buff Orpington hen who is one year old. Her belly is hard and bloated, and the skin is very bright red. She can hardly walk. At first I thought you might have an egg stuck, but why would the skin be bright red. Then I thought she might have been bitten by something. I am keeping her quiet in a dog crate with food and water. Anybody have any suggestions what it is and what I can do for her. PLEASE HELP I don't wnat to loose her.

She sounds either egg bound or has laid internally. Please type in the search area Egg Binding and you will find all kinds of things to try and do for this issue. If she has laid internally that is another issue and she may need vet care. Try everything (and there is alot) you can with egg binding. Hope she re-coops fast.

if she is egg bound you can give her a warm bath for 30 minutes and apply some olive oil around her vent to help move the egg, may take several baths. I heard of folks putting them on a warm heating pad too. Not sure what to do if it is internal laying, I don't think that is good. look it up in the search, both egg bound and internal laying

Thanks for the info. I have been giving her warm baths and mineral oil (at both ends) since Sunday and her conditon is still the same today and showing no improvement. I will continue today again with the warm baths and mineral oil. Hopefully something will happen here soon. Thanks for all your help, wouldn't know what to do without the advice and support.

In addition to egg bound, there are two things you might want to consider. Is her abdomen full of fluid? It could be 'ascites,' or an excessive amount of fluid in the (peridontal?) cavity. If it's hard, like really hard, it could be something called 'peritonitis', which, if I remember right, is considered a kind of internal laying.

Here are two links for you to compare symptoms: ascites and peritonitis Make sure to look at the pictures near the bottom of link #2, the hen has a swollen, red belly.

Don't give up--you're doing exactly what you should be doing. Good luck with her, keep us posted!

Update!!!! My hen seems to be doing better today. I let her out of the dog crate and she is walking around inside the hen house. She is walking much better and eating like normal. I still am continuing the bath treatments along with the mineral oil at both ends, but at least I am seeing some signs of improvement.
