What would cause a bobwhite to lay such a small egg

You didnt say how long the hen has been laying. But when they first start it takes awhile to get the plumbing worked out as it were.... You often get these in the early on... Some call them "fart eggs", I dont know why...... Some have no yolk. Some are all yolk. Some are just very small...... you'll also sometimes see them when a hen is stressed.....

Ok, thanks, they have been laying a couple weeks now. We have been having strong thunderstorms this past week, could that be stressing the hens?

yes it could be night time storms as they are blind at night.... but id just bet its because she just started laying and still working it all out. Its very common.... she'll get completely "on line" shortly....
