Hi everyone! I have a poor silkie with eye issues. About a week ago, we noticed a swollen oozing eye.

(sorry, I don't know how to rotate this photo)

We didn't notice any other symptoms, no wheezing or nose drainage. Some of her feathers were a little crusty, but we couldn't determine if she had gotten muddy.

We have experienced some heavy rain a few days prior. They are kept in their coop, I use sand as the main substrate, but there is some coastal hay. We discovered this poor girl the day before we had to leave town, based on some internet research, I added tetracycline to the entire flock's water for the day, but my house sitter did not do anything special for the remainder of the week.

When we returned home five days later, my poor girl had gotten much worse!! =(

(oh dear, upside down and blurry)

So her eye had gotten VERY enlarged, not quite oozing anymore, but has a yellow/white cheesey type engorgement . at this point I doubt she can even see out of this eye :( It is just this eye, still no wheezing, not much of any other symptoms. No wheezing or drainage. We moved her away from the flock, and she is still perching, eating just a little, poop seems normal. I began tetracycline immediately after we came home again, for both her separate cage and the rest of the flock. (the rest of the flock seems fine as of now). We also attempt to irrigate her eye with saline daily, but it doesn't seem to do much.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN DO???? Any help would be appreciated!! I hate to see her in this state!

i had a andalusian do the same thing, when i would open her eye it had a big white alser on it. i used neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension (tried triple antibiotics but it didnt work) twice a day for two weeks, its now not swollen anymore and she opens and closes it with the other eye but she can not see out of it anymore. i kept her with the other chicks and am not sure how she got it but i feel like she got it at meyer hatchery before she was shipped to me. not totaly sure though. good luck with your chick!

Thanks Mamma, the medications you are referring to, are they topical? Would I be able to get them at Tractor Supply? I'm being diligent with my tetracycline water everyday, but I'm hoping that there is something more aggressive I can do for her poor eye. Thanks so much!!
