Hi friends
Figured since I'm a member nows a good time to ask. Since we've had these three hens one of them has laid a thin shelled egg with calcium deposits. It wasn't really an issue before but now they're starting to break when another girl goes to the box to lay an egg. So, any idea what might be the cause? Here's a photo and on the right is one of the other girls eggs. The two on the left are the thin shelled ones. (They're never a weird shape or texture or anything)

There could be different causes. How old is the hen and what type. I would try mixing in some oyster shell with the feed. My hens never seemed to eat it if I just left it out but would if I mixed some in their feed. Maybe that will help.

What feed are they on? Do you also provide extra calcium free choice? I mix oyster shell with ground dried eggshells and they will always pick out the eggshell. But they do seem to know when they need extra calcium and go through it rather quickly.
Also, what breed? I had many soft shell issues with my RIRs but nit with any if the others.

Rhode island red and leg horn mix, we rescued them but I think about 3 years old? They never eat the oyster shell they just kick it around. Maybe I need to find a better feeder for it? They eat an egg laying pellet mix from a local feed store and then they regularly get a bug mix and cabbage and whatever they eat from the yard. Maybe they're filling up on other stuff and not eating enough pellet food?
