Vet gave sulmet for respiratory disease. 2 - Died anyway

I think they are coming/meeting me to get him. I called at 8am and haven't heard back from the field agent yet. Results should take 3-7 days.

Once they get them, they usually don't wait to start the necropsy. I always get a preliminary report emailed to me the day the get my bird. It looks like this.

The first page looks like what I just filled out to go with the roo. He is being shipped to Tx. in the morning by fedx. We will hear back within a week. Wish they could email me but we have to wait for the snails.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Get a tracking number and call them the day after he arrives, they should be able to give you a preliminary verbal report.

IF you still have live flock TRY to get your hands on Tiamulin asap. Its a bit pricey($44 at QC Supply) BUT 1 bottle will last awhile. I just spoke to My Avian Vet(30+yrs practicing) about my Return of a Respiratory Disease(Starts with Feather loss,Excessive Wet Mouth,Lung Rattling, will only eat stuff easy to swallow :seed,Corn-anything that will slide). When this FIRST started appearing 2yrs ago I used LA200Inj.(1cc every other day for 2 weeks 5-6lb. hen). My Last reaccurance was 8mos & then again 4mos. later. We cultured for MG(which was MY first guess) but it was Neg. IN SHORT Now she thinks I'm right & the test came back Neg. due to antibiotics still in hens system.
I told her the LA200 WITH Baytri as a secondary wasn't working anymore. She stated she had done some research since my last call & thinks because it keeps coming back that we are dealing with Microplasma. I asked what she thought about Tylan 200 & if it was worth the $. She said per her research that Tylan was over used in the US & these bacteria have built up a resistance(I'm an MA & in short laymans terms the virus mutates & becomes stronger-more resistant to common drugs available at the Feed store). She advised I try Tiamulin liquid(for Chronic MG 2cc per qt . of water FOR 2 WEEKS. THERE IS NO WITHDRAWL & NOT GOING LONG ENOUGH CAN BACKFIRE. IF THIS IS A FIRST TIME JUST STARTED YOU MAY ONLY JAVE TO GO 1 WEEK BUT THE RULE OF THUMB IS 3-4 DAYS 100% SYMPTOM FREE. THIS DRUG IS CLASSED FOR SWINE BUT IT HAS HAD GREAT SUCCESS IN POULTRY ESPEC. FOR RESPIRATORY DISEASES. ANOTHER GOOD THING(which may confuse you/question this at first) is it has NOT been FDA approved here in the US but is used in Europe and has great success, This ALSO means that OUR strains would Not have a resistance. TREAT ALL FLOCK MEMBERS BECAUSE ITS VERY CONTAGIOUS. THE INFECTED HEN DROPS LAYER PELLET,ETC. & THEN ANOTHER COMES AND EATS IT.
I DID RESEARCH IT BEFORE BUYING & I HAVE SEEN NOTHING BUT EXCELLENT REVIEWS. THE ONLY PLACE I FOUND IT IN THE U.S. WAS QC SUPPLY ONLINE WHICH IS OUT OF NEBRASKA SO IF YOU ARE IN THIS AREA YOU COULD GET IT QUICKER. THEY MAIL UPS (SEE REVIEWS ON THIS PRODUCT ON QC SITE. I FIND IT FUNNY THAT 90% OF THE COMMENTS ARE ABOUT USING IT FOR CHICKENS & NOT PIGS.
I HAVEN'T tried it yet myself but after 2hrs. of research I have a pretty Positive outlook.
IF your Hens won't drink & they mean a lot I have a solution but it does take diligence/patience!
IF you DO NOT have a feeding tube-syringe(can get from local Avian Vet$5-7 or Possibly a feed store go & buy an Enema bottle. Then dump & wash contents out. You will put your drench(meds./water mixture) into bottle. Make sure the rubber gasket remains this will help with flow so they don't choke What I do is put the Hen between my knees in a squatting position OR on a Roost can sometimes work. I then CAREFULLY stretch the chickens neck upward a bit which helps them not to choke & the water goes right into the crop. .CAREFULLY INSERT THE TIP DOWN THE BACK OF THROAT & GENTLY SQUEEZE A LITTLE & REMOVE. YOU DO NOT WANT TO SQUEEZE TO HARD-FAST. You may want to stroke the hens throat downward gently. IF they start coughing let them(worst case tip them forward for just a few secs & back up). AS FAR AS FEEDING IN AN EMERGENCY ITS MUCH EASIER TO HAVE A FEEDING TUBE. IF YOU CAN'T GET ONE THEN YOU CAN STRADDLE HEN BETWEEN KNEES,GENTLY SQUEEZE ON SIDE OF BEAK & DROP LAYING PELLET IN. THEN IMMEDIATLY -QUICKLY GIVE THE FOOD A GENTLE PUSH WITH FINGER. THEN STROKE DOWNWARD ON THROAT. YOU MAY WANT TO SQUIRT A TAD OF MEDICATED WATER INTERMITTENTLY. THIS WILL ALSO HELP FOOD SLIDE THE REASON FOR LACK OF EATING DRY IS THAT THE MOUTH/THROAT ARE SO WET THE DRY PELLETS(ESPEC. CRUMBLE)GET STUCK. YOU WILL NOTICE THE MOUTH GETS WETTER WHILE FEEDING. I PERSONALLY TRY TO MIX IN A LITTLE MEATBIRD/OVAL SHAPED -SMALL SEEDS. WASH HANDS BEFORE & AFTER TO HELP AVOID NON INFECTED FLOCK MEMBERS.
TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM A LOT OF CORN. A LITTLE IS OK BUT CORN TURNS TO SUGAR & SUGARS WILL FEED BACTERIA/FUNGUS.
I WILL TRY TO REPORT BACK ON MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ON HOW IT WORKS. I PERSONALLY NOTICE WHEN THE WEATHER CHANGES IS WHEN I SEE AN OUTBREAK. I STARTED QUESTIONING (WITH THIS SPECIFIC RESPIRATORY DISEASE) IF IT IS CAUSING MORE HARM BY KEEPING THEM INSIDE/THEN LETTING THEM OUT DURING DAY. SHE AGREED THAT IT WOULD BE BETTER IF I KEPT THEM IN THE BARN& THEN WHEN THEY GET WELL BACK TO THE COOP. THE SHOCK OF WARM TO COLD CAN STRESS THEM & CAUSE A RELAPSE. WELL I THINK I HAVE SAID ENOUGH. I CAN ONLY SAY I KNOW THE DESPERATION FEELING-STRESSED OUT SO I HOPE TO HELP SOMEONE WITH THIS INFO.
GOOD LUC & GOD BLESS!, LUCIANA M.A./Chicken Lover
