I have two points of view on this situation. First as a dog owner and animal lover, the second as a property owner who just started raising chickens. In my mind at the moment, I could do it, however I bought a really nice sling shot today with glass ammo, I will be practicing to shoot these when my mindset is not set on killing an attacker. I will be now adopting the shoot on sight policy, even if its just to hit them with glass.
As an animal lover I applaud you for trying to find other methods to deter them, many wouldn't. My first suggestion is to use paintball pellets. Maybe if the dogs go home (assuming they have one) with paint all over them the owner might take notice and keep them contained. Or better yet, they'll call the police and report it then you'll know who the dogs belong to.
As a property owner w two dogs and five new chicks . . if they are attacking your animals and you, and the authorities won't do anything, you may have no other choice, but to put them down.
Would you shoot a wild animal that attacked you or your animals? If the answer is yes, then visualize them as wolves/coyotes because feral dogs are just that, wild animals. Unfortunately, if the situation isn't handle it could get worse if they mate and have pups raised wild.
Your safety should come first. You might feel bad about it, but at least you'll be alive to feel bad about it. Bury the dog and say a prayer over it if you feel the need, then go love on your girls and remember why you did it.
