Vines on/over the coop WARNING!!

Just a note.. we grew this gorgeous long neck gourd vine (ONLY ONE) on the outside of the coop and for the longest time it was this cute little vine.. then it took off.. it covered the entire coop netting all the way up to the side of the shed.. and started growing up the roof of the shed.. then it got too heavy.. and colapsed.. not only did it fall.. it attracted bugs.. leading to poultry lice.. and it stopped the sun from drying up the rain water in the coop..

while on the hot days it was wonderful for the birds to have some shade.. rainy days stayed wet..

It looked beautiful!! But got too heavy and fell..

so my suggestions would be this...

#1 pick a very light vine...
#2 pick a vine that doesnt have a tendency to take over
#3 pick a slow growing vine that lets light through

wow, thats bad...I mean its nice that it could grow that pretty but to affect things like it did!!!! what was it? do you have a picture of the coop with the vine>

This is perfect timing! I have a Morning Glory starting to climb onto the wire of my run, and I couldn't decided whether I should let it go or cut it. I had a feeling I might be in trouble If I let it grow!

Most vines are very fast growing. Pruning is required. I love my clematis, honeysuckle, akebia, trumpet, and hydrangea. but I do fill my yard waste recycling (96 gal) several times a year keeping them in control. Morning glory shouldn't be a problem, but are considered poisonous. If it's the white wild one, just prune every few years.

Imp has lots of chainlink, thus lots of vines.

I love vines and have nearly none.

Need to get that going next spring.

I do have some wild honeysuckle that I refused to let my DH or anyone else clear out. My red honeysuckle was hacked off by a helpful friend who came and did some weedeating for me. (after I SPECIFICALLY pointed to it and said, "Do NOT go near that pole with that vine at the bottom of it!" I think all he heard was "... pole with that vine at the bottom of it..." )

It came back out but instead of being about 3', it's now about 5" ...

it might not have been lice.. they were little brown bugs.. that looked like translucent fleas.. but They were on the vine first.. then the chikens.. I will look to see if i have a picture.. it was really neat looking..
