after giving my hens a vitamin B pill today for their bi-monthly dosage i remembered something i had heard a while back
"since vitamin D aids in egg-laying you can give hens a vitamin D pill and they will lay exceptionally well"

is this true or is it just an old wise tale

Interesting. Why do you give them a B pill?

Not sure on the D - but I bet its related to haveing less sunlight in winter.

Sounds like perhaps a human pill being crushed up or something? I dunno.

I think it might be better to give them some multi-vit in their water if a person is concerned for some reason.

a vitamin B pill helps with their metabolism and keeps them eating right.

i just went to Wal-Mart and went to healthand beauty and got a bottle of vitamin B

you jus give it to them like a dog hold them down open their mouth and pop it in they dont fight or any thing.a chickens throat is larger than you think so they can take the whole pill

I've never heard of anyone doing that.

I would be worried about giving them HUMAN vitamins, why don't you get some MADE for chickens that you can add to their water if you're concerned for their health?

I've had chickens just over a year and never had to give vitamins at all.

I gave mine water soluble Vitamins and Electrolytes mixed in water at the rate of 1/2 tsp per gallon. I only gave it to them as chicks for 3 days every other week until they were a month old. Their feed seems to have plenty so I haven't given them any since then.
I suppose they might expel what B Vitamins their body didn't use but I personally wouldn't chance it.
Also, in high doses Vitamin D is toxic!! We get it from the sun so why not let them absorb it naturally? They sunbathe instinctively.
