My 10 month old BA, Hazel, is active, healthy-looking and laying mostly every day. In the last month or so she will let out a scream like a banshee when setting to lay. Shortly afterwards, Hazel emerges from the coop nest and resumes her active behavior, having laid a normal-looking egg. I've never had any hens vocalize like this when laying. Initially I thought Hazel screamed only when one of her sisters was snooping to inspect her in the act. But she'll scream even when her privacy is maintained. No blood products on Hazel or her egg, ever. Anyone else have a vocal hen during egg-laying? I hope it doesn't indicate pain, but that's my main concern.

I've heard them grunting and panting when laying but never heard one cry out. I can't imagine it's a comfortable experience, especially their first few months
