I have some sort of vole that makes rather sizable mounds in the pasture. In the past my chickens would spend a lot of time foraging those same areas. Now that I have a couple sheep and a goat, they are showing the same reference for plants growing there.

I have noticed that I have mole tunnels everywhere except inside the chicken run and that the chickens preferentially scratch up the areas where the mole tunnels were when I give them new ground.

I suspect they're attracted to the softeness of the disturbed ground initially and enjoy the high-protein snacks when they encounter the tunnels' inhabitants.

Voles eat roots, so I guess whatever you have growing there must be tasty above and below the ground.
