voting to change city ordinance

The City Council in our town want the people to vote on changing the town ordinance banning chickens. Accepting chickens within the city limits of my town will be put on the ballot in June. I would love some input as to how we should campaign for this cause. Any input would be appreciated. We have been working on getting the ordinance changed to accept chickens and now it will be on the ballot. This is our chance to make a difference in our small town in ND. Please help.

I would use the no chemicals added and not processed in china argument (that seems to be getting a lot of attention these days). Gets the kids out of the house. ( We have our son help, this way he don't think everything has to come from a store).The egg collections are rewarding and also saves a little money when out grocery shopping. If you can allow the birds to free range even just for a little while, they can help keep bugs at bay.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out and some of the step used to get this to a vote. I have a similar issue in my town. I have the better to ask forgiveness than permission attitude.

This has been an uphill battle. 2 deputy sheriffs were at my door informing me of the ordinance against chickens. Up to 30 days in jail and/or 500.00 fine. I have had 4 hens for years with no knowledge of the ordinance. The citizens in our town rallied around the chickens. 3 local newspapers picked up the story. The council chamber was packed with citizens defending the chickens. One of the biggest turnouts ever! The council then decided to put it on the ballot so the people could vote. Now we need to campaign as a property owners for the right to have chickens. Any input would be helpful.

There is a bill currently in the Arizona legislature that specifically says it is a property rights issue, and would disallow ordinances and zoning that forbids poultry in single family residences.
