Hi Everyone,

I've wanted to raise chickens for as long as I could remember and finally got my chance when I recently bought a home with a HOA that allows chickens as long as they are not a "nuisance" i.e. no roosters. I am very picky about eggs and how they are produced and have spent a fortune at the store buying eggs as a result. I literally did not buy another house I liked because the HOA banned chickens. :)

I have four chicks in a brooder right now that I purchased at a local Tractor Supply, two California Whites (2 weeks old) and two Barred Rocks (3 weeks old.) I find them endlessly entertaining and look forward to having fresh eggs available for my family. I have chosen not to name my chickens to see if I can go the distance and cull my flock without tears when the time comes. I think it's important to be able to process my own meat as I hope to one day have a larger tract of land and raise both meat and egg chickens for food. My children love the chicks and it gives the whole family something to huddle around that does not involve our iPhones, TV or video games.

I work from home so have the luxury of checking in on my chicks multiple times a day. If anyone has any tips on how to keep shavings out of the waterer, I appreciate it. Maybe I need to elevate it a bit?

My hobbies are riding dirt bikes with my hubby and sons in the beautiful off road trails of Idaho and hiking with friends.

I found BYC through a Pinterest link that I found by searching "barred rock chicks male vs. female" in a search engine. I'm excited to find a place to dork out on chicken raising without annoying my friends and family who don't have the fever. :)

Welcome to BackYardChickens! So glad to have you here in our wonderful community of friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people! Yes, either elevate the waterer or hang it, as we did, from the ceiling of the run, using a chain. Works well. We also have one of those systems where there's a tank, pvc pipes running to little cups that the chickens activate by pecking at the little 'trigger'. The chickens like that one.
