We just started with our chickens as 2 week old chicks 14 weeks ago. (The oldest are 16 weeks, the youngest 8 weeks). Our 4 year old golden retriever has food allergies, and recently has been scratching up a storm. My college aged daughter actually took her to a vet allergist, who instead of saying it was allergies, told us she has "walking dandruff" which is caused by a mite. She did not think to ask if the mites might have come from the chickens, but I guess it is highly contagious dog to dog. If the chickens did not start it, would the birds be likely to catch it from the dog? They do free range in the yard, where the dog is also roaming. The dog is being treated w/Revolution,& the house is being treated with Siphotrol Plus II, which contains Permethrin. Should I be treating the coop and/or chickens w/a poultry dust? I have not seen any signs of mites when cleaning the droppings board or roosts, all chickens appear to be healthy.
