Wanted: Brown egg laying hens for a new backyard chicken coop in CA

I live in the Monterey Bay area and am looking for a good place to get some hens. I don't want to start from an egg or a hatchling because I have never raised chickens before. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice? Thanks!
