I was surprised to learn how difficult it is for me to find a start of "wild type" game fowl. There are undoubtedly many out there but when found in the possession of "cockers" (people who pit cocks) are very often from mixed phenotypes and associated with wheaten hens and because pit fowl are mostly bred now-a-days from winning battle cocks and unrelated close female relatives of other winning battle cocks, it is getting hard to find cockers who breed a family that "breed true" and cockers neither know nor care what the original chicken looked like. I do not have 40 years to get mixed blood fowl to "breed true". Does anyone here who knows

what I am talking about also know where they can be found?

For those who do not know what e^+/e^+ means, it means fowl that are homozygous for e^+. If they breed true they are likely homozygous. For those who do not know what e^+ means (e superscript +), it is the "wild type" E allele (the + means "wild type"). For those who do not know what "wild type" means, it is defined as the phenotype represented by the Red Jungle Fowl. If anyone does not know what a Red Jungle Fowl looks like see above which may be a Red Jungle Fowl or the domesticated fowl I am looking for. Although quite different animals, they may be indistinguishable in photos. It is gold hackled (cockers call them "lemon" hackled), straight combed, blue legged red duck wing cocks with hens of the "partridge" color with salmon breast. This hen color is easily distinguished from the light brown bodied hen which is indicative of the wheaten color gene (e^Wh).

While I am not interested in pit activities, game fowl have been bred for 6,000 to 8,000 years in a VERY different way than other domestic chickens and very similar to the way the wild fowl self select. ALL other domestic chickens have been bred by taking advantage of MUTATIONS from the wild type.

In short, does anyone know where I can find the original domestic chicken? If so, please send a note to [email protected]
