Hi, my name is Donna and I wanted to post my intro. I was trying to think of something witty and clever to say, but it's simply too early! Normal, but hopefully interesting intro to follow.
My partner and I started our flock/tiny urban farm a few months ago. This is my first time with livestock, but he has raised chickens, ducks and goats previously. I live in the middle of a big city, but have about 1/3 of an acre of land, which is not really typical. My house is on the ridge of a canyon, which backs up to a large park. So, I have neighbors on each side of me, but no houses or streets behind me.
We currently have....*counts in chicken math in my head* 21 chickens. We have 3 Rhode Island Red, 1 Rhode Island White, 2 Black Laced Wyandotte (1 is a rooster), 1 Plymouth Barred Rock, 1 White Cochin, 1 Easter Egger rooster (somewhat disappointed that my EE is a rooster, but he is BEAUTIFUL!), 4 Jersey Black Giants, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Brahmas and 2 Cornish X. We also have 2 Pekin ducks.
My favorite part of this has been the work, really. It is so satisfying to do the physical work of building the coops and runs, feeding, tending, watching them grow. In striving for self-sufficiency, we started last year with a beautiful garden, and this year we are aiming for egg, milk and meat production.
In addition to our birds, we also have a pair of goats that we brought home 2 months ago. I have 3 (soon to be 4) Australian Shepherds that I breed, and 1 Great Pyrenees LGD that lives with our livestock. I am a midwife, attending home births, and I have 9 kids of my own as well as 6 grandkids so far. I train my dogs for conformation showing as well as agility.
I found this site by joining the Facebook group. I really just saw today that it was an active forum, so didn't waste any time lurking. I just jumped right in!
