wanting more chicks

I want to get more chicks and was wondering where is a good place to order small quantities? I only want 5 or so.

Several of the hatcheries will ship smaller quantities but that is expensive. Some of them will add packing peanuts too so you really get more than you want. I don't know which breeds you are looking for, but I'd suggest advertising in the appropriate section on here for someone local you could buy from or put signs up in your feed store if they will allow that. Many states have a special thread in the "Where am I, Where are You" section that can be helpful. Maybe use the search function to find it. Maybe you can find someone in your area that wants to split a shipment with you. Call your county extension agent, in the phone book under county government, and pose the question to them. They will probably know local sources of chicks. Advertise on Craig's List or check local listings.

You can probably find something local if you are not too picky on breeds and even then you might get lucky. One of the problems with many breeds is that you might get roosters as well as pulets if you get them as chicks locally. You can maybe make arrangements with whomever you get them from locally to take roosters back, get sex linked chicks, or buy chicks old enough that you can tell the sex.

Give craigs list a shot. I found some Silver Sebright bantams on there and ended up walking away with some white leghorns. You might also check with the local feed store or TSC. One of the kids at our local TSC raises 300 chickens a year and is a wealth of knowledge and birds. And goats. And donkeys. And etc...

Right now, many local feed stores are sponsoring Chick Days. You might call and ask if anyone in your area is doing this. Ours carry both just-hatched straight run (any combination of pullets and roos) and pullet only choices. Recently when I went in for new chicks, I found Araucanas, black and red sex links, barred rocks, Polish Crested and some other banties, California Whites, plus assorteds plus meat chicks. This way you can purchase just as many as you want, avoid the shipping terrors, and get them right when you are ready. They will also have the equipment, meds, chick starter, and other items you may need. Ours are healthy and active. ~G
