Hi there!

I used to raise pheasants and bobwhites and sold them for stocking along with my flock of 20 or so chickesn. I had to sell my birds off when the town forced me to do so due to zoneing laws. I got a apartment where I go to school, and im going to be getting about 5-7 layers, and figured I would try and raise some cot quail.

I have an incubator, so I can hatch some eggs hopefully.

Anything special I should know? What is a good number to start with? They will be for meat and eggs.

How many sqft per bird do they need?

incubation for Coturnix is 18 days

don't worry if they go on longer, chicks are known to come out even up to day 23

everything else is same

you don't need a male for just eggs but males for fertility is good idea if you want to increase

1 male to 5 hens is the recommendation

chicks need game feed 30% protein and then layers need 20% at least

having a males is a good idea as they don't crow and stock replenishment can be achieved

im also new to quails so this is the best I can answer

but im sure there are things I missed that others will add

good luck

I would go with Jumbo coturnix quail and raise as many as your coop space allow. You just keep the large, quiet, good layer, no leg defect, etc... It take few generations and you end up with friendly, large egg, and large bird.
By the way, my quail start hatching on 16th days so the lock down for me is day 14th. If you don't open the incubator often, the chick will hatch early.
I am using 30% Game Bird feed.
