I've been thinking about raising chickens for a few years, and done lots of research the last couple months. I really want to start a flock this year, but my husband's not sure it's the right time. I'd like to get some chicks next month, but we might be moving in the fall, which would be right around when the hens should start laying. Would that be too stressful for them? And we'd probably move again in a year or two (my in-laws are planning a long term trip, months, up to a year or two, and have asked us to stay in their home while they're gone, but it's still not certain when they're leaving). We'd only be moving the next town over, both towns have the same rules on keeping chickens.
I just really want to get chickens now, I feel like I'm personally at a good time to take on this project. I know I would enjoy it, I've always loved animals (we have a dog), I have fond memories visiting my cousin's house and seeing their backyard chickens, and we've visited my sister-in-laws small farm and had a blast. My two young boys would love the extra pets, and I want them to have this experience, too.
Just looking for different perspectives, whether you think I can make it work to start a flock this year, or if you were in my position, would you wait another year or so?
Thanks! Excited to be a part of BYC.
