Warm/cool, humid/dry... mold question

In one of my houses back in CA (near the coast), we had mold on the walls every winter ~ even when windows were left open all the time! Sometimes it's just too humid, and there are just too many mold spores for things to stay dry. Here is one thing I found that really, really reduces the speed of mold growing back: Simple Green cleaner. You can find it at your local variety store (Wal Mart, etc.), it comes in a green spray bottle or pour bottle, it is quite safe, and when you use it for your wall/floor scrubbing you will find you don't have to scrub again for a very long time.

I have even used it to scrub the nasty, blackened north side of the vinyl siding of my house, and five years later I have still not needed to repeat.

Ventilation is important, keeping things dry is important, but if you need something extra that stuff will do the trick.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

You've all been really helpful. I read your 'Big Ol Ventilation Page' Pat, very informative! I will have a look at the feed store for Dry Stall, but so far so good. Everything's been left wide open with the fans going and their heat lamp blazing. I'll keep an eye on things through the rest of the cold weather and see how the coop does. Of course it's cold out today and feels comparatively dryer outside (drier?)

Lynn, your chickens are much braver than mine. There's not a footprint outside since the snow came

They're all bickering with each other indoors, scared silly of the white stuff haha

I think I actually have some Simple Green... I used dilute bleach 1:10 on the walls and aired it out before the chickens returned. It seemed to work well. If I need to do it again when they're inside hiding from the snow I'll try the simple green
