We looked out on our deck to find a hen pecking at an egg so I went out to stop her. This egg was not there last night. No way a hen could push it there because there are steps to get on deck. Is it possible the hen got scared and didn't lay the egg until after it started developing?? We got a rescue dog about a month ago and she slip the leash chased the chickens. I'm sure they were terrified. Could that have caused this?

Your dog probably found the egg and carried it off. Chickens don't keep eggs inside of them until they develop.
You must have a broody hen somewhere though, sitting on eggs. By the looks of this baby, the eggs are pretty far along too.
You were right. Makes me sick and so sad. Thank you for answering me.
