When my kids were growing up, I just let them work it out with the hens. If they wanted their toes/polish exposed, well then, they'd attract attention from the birds that they didn't want.
Pretty soon "coop attire" was close toed shoes, and no jewelry. A rare occasion where I didn't have to say a word!
