this is what I've found, however you may be able to persuade them to reconsider, or if you are not within the city limits it appears to be ok!

I would definitely look into asking the ordinance board to reconsider... maybe offering them something "small" like this:

Just a thought! Good luck!

currently bringing attention to changing this ordinance in WARSAW IN. looking promising so far ....a lot has changed since 2014 and I have been working with a council member and the ordinance enforcer is on my side as well and has given me much needed time to pursue a change. Below is what I'm taking to the common council meeting along with given facts of the benefits to backyard chickens :

Common Council of Warsaw Indiana,

I’d like to start by saying thank you for the opportunity to address an ordinance that hasn’t been discussed since 2014 which had a 4 to 3 vote not allowing a change to be made:

Sec.6-68. -Wild, farm or exotic animals.

No farm animal/livestock shall be kept within the city, subject to zoning ordinance. No wild or exotic animal shall be kept within the city without the necessary state and /or federal permits.

(Ord. No. 2010-06-05, 8-2-2010)

A lot has changed since 2014 regarding our community and the economical state of our country. Having the ability to be less dependent on the grocery store to provide the proper nutrition for your family isn’t a set back for any community. The benefits of being able to provide key essentials of nutrition not only directly benefits a single family, but it also benefits the community’s awareness and dependency on the big box stores. After covid who knows what could be available at any given time? When we’ve been given the ability to do the same at home through simple processes like raising chickens and gardening. Going back to some of the older ways of living brings communities together helping encourage and raise each other up working together.

A lot of the argument with chickens in town is either the smell or the noise. Both can be addressed through simple regulation and requirements that can be determined through city officials and involved members of the community. For example;

South Bend allows 6 chickens per household with Coops 20feet from other dwellings and 15feet from lot lines. (permit required as well)

Indianapolis allows 12 hens and one rooster with Coop requirements left to the city officials where permits may be required as well.

Evansville allows 6 hens with Coops 50 feet from neighboring homes and 10 feet from property lines not requiring a permit.

Huntington has a minimum acreage requirement with no limitation on amount based on current animal husbandry and veterinarian standards.

Goshen allows 6 hens with a Twenty-five-dollar registration fee every 2 years.

The financial burdens many of us are facing in this community can be alleviated by being more self-sufficient providing an avenue of educating our children in the raising of chickens with the responsibility and stewarding of what God has provided.

Article 1 Sec.1 of our State Constitution states: WE DECLARE, That all people are created equal; that they are endowed by their CREATOR with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that all power is inherent in the people; and that all free governments are, and of right ought to be, founded on their authority, and instituted for their peace, safety, and well-being. For the advancement of these ends, the people have, at all times, an indefeasible right to alter and reform their government.
