Went to the feed store today to get a couple bags of feed on a special sale...came out with those AND an Ameracauna chick with a very bad leg that appears to have been previously broken and fused at the thigh, so that it has full range of motion but juts out to the side and causes her to limp badly. The lady at the feed store gave her to me for free so I could try to help her. She is super cute and healthy aside from her wonky leg, so we will give her a good fighting chance. :)

Hmm. So a rotated leg... Doesn't that start as a slipped tendon, that wasn't fixed? I'm not sure there's a brace or anything that will help with that. There's a lot I don't know though

No, the injury is mid-thigh. I wish it was as simple as a tendon problem, but you can actually feel the bend in the bone itself. All leg joints work just fine, just the leg wants to stick out at an awkward angle. She can draw it up under her when she sits if she really tries, but walking causes her problems.

Hmm...probably not a whole lot you can do then except hope it lives a fairly normal life.

Wonderful of your to adopt a special one!

I've had a duck before with a deformed leg and she ended up drowning in her water dish. Be super careful about that! Some people swear by adding marbles to the water dish to help prevent drowning. Good luck!

Little ducklings sometimes do drown even if they are not deformed. The very reputable Storey 'Raising chicks" reccomend marbles too.

Update on the little one....after a week or so under my care(nothing special, just a suitable environment and space to move around), she is walking almost normally. I kid you not, you can hardly tell she ever had such a problem. I honestly didn't expect her to improve quite this dramatically, but I'll take it!
