Was just given a disabled gosling . Not sure what to do.

So I guess word spreads quickly that I'll take in "strays" and about an hour ago, a woman showed up with 4 kids in tow and an injured/disabled gosling. She says its a Sebastopol and is about 3 weeks old. She said about a week ago she noticed that this gosling was in the brooder with its leg twisted outward and she has no idea what happened to it.

I don't know what happened but I do know that he/she can't stand up fully and is standing on its right hock, The bottom portion of its leg looks....well dead. I've been holding him since I brought him in a house. He's a sweetheart, nibbling at me and "talking". I think he's been socialized because he doesn't mind me holding him.

So anyone have any advice? I just gave him some polyvisol. Any thing else I can do??

Wow it's so cute.Racking my brain here.I had a duck with a broken leg a couple year's ago.I actualy slipped and dropped a gallon water' on it's leg and it broke the leg right in the bend.Talk about crying

.But I taped the leg securely and kept it sep. from the other duck's for a few week's and it did recoup.I'm not sure it it's fixable if it's an old injury or not.I raised geese too and the only major injurie's I had to acouple of mine were turtle's and a fox to seperate geese.Sadly We lost both of those because of the severe injurie's.I had a duck once that lost a whole foot to a turtle but did very well and she could almost outrun the other duck's with one foot.If you can possibly afford a vet try that.Many however don't have a clue or won't even bother.If not the only advice I have is wrap the leg snugly but not tight with medical tape and keep it warm and dry and food and water and keep it in a small area where it can move around a lot.I hope you baby get's better.Maybe someone else has some more advice for you.

I wonder if he got stepped on (by a child) and his hip pulled out of joint? Poor little thing. I wonder about the hip joint as the leg is sticking out sideways. Is the leg and foot warm (meaning good circulation)? Any movement at all in the leg, even the toes twitching?

Legs warm now, it wasn't when she brought it. There literally was no color in the leg but there is now. Toes aren't moving at all although there is warmth in them. I want to wait to put he or she in the tub although a bath is needed.

The baby is so happy though! That's a good sign. And she's talking up a storm!! I'm thinking this may be a female now that I look at it. I don't want to mess too much with her tonight. She's been through a lot.

ya know as women it is hard to have anything when you have kids ( small kids). My friend's child wouldn't leave her geesea alone and she put em outside and they both died so now she won't get anymore. At times like this with all the babies I have hatched out this spring I am glad my babies are old enuf to know NO!

My children, (who are all adults with families of their own) and my 8 year old grandson have all grown up with animals. From dogs & cats to parrots. Chickens, geese, guineas, and ducks are new. (About 18 months now)

I think that if you teach children to respect animals and to treat them kindly, that they'll do so well. My 8 year old grandson has a Blue & Gold macaw. He's had her since he was 4 and she was just a chick. He can handle her almost as well as I can.

I think it's possible that someone stepped on this gosling's leg. The leg joint is swollen, although she doesn't seem to be in any pain. I have a heating pad on low, on her and I have vet wrapped her leg to her side for some stability.

She's such a sweet thing! She's already melted my heart, big time. I think I'm going to devise a sling so I can take her with me while I do farm chores.

I only sat here reading this for a few moments and she has melted my heat too. Goslings are just the sweetest baby.

I am also known as someone to take injured and stray animals. A guy at work brought me his MIL's gosling last year. It sat under my desk all day at work- and I strapped its little legs together as soon as i had given t a bath when we got home. She slept that first night on my bed and was just adorale. The splay leg was cured in a week- and little goose went back home to its parents. I cried as I watched it run over and chat with its mum, dad and siblings.

Could it possibe be a slipped tendon?

Unfortunately this sweet little gosling didn't survive. I woke up yesterday morning and she had died overnight. She had to have been sick on top of her leg issues. I cried my heart out because I really thought she was doing well.

We buried her in our little animal graveyard. Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions.
