I went out to feed the quail today, and one hen was dead. It appears she had difficulty laying an egg-she was swollen. gross, I know, but I pushed the egg out and it was totally pale blue--no spots. Is a plain blue egg normal? Was it just a freak thing? She had been laying for about two weeks.

Sounds like she didn't make it trying to lay that egg. I'm no quail expert but did you open her up and look inside? I've heard of hens having what looks like tumors inside and you don't know it until its too late.

I've had chicken hens (that were old) have the tumours, (internal laying)but considering this hen was only 8 weeks old, I figured she was too young for that. I've only had quail since April, so I'm failrly new to the quail. I did not open her up to look though.

I had one hen do the same. She had spots on one half, blue on the rest, the egg was stuck in her vent and it was a deep, bruised black all around the area.

I felt really bad for not noticing her plight.

Yes, exactly the same, all bruised! Except the egg was all blue. when I tended to them last night, all seemed fine, and then I find her this way this morning. Sad. Was your hen young too as in--jsut starting to lay?

a blue egg with no spots is just an egg that wasn't in the the painting area of her vent long enough....it almost sounds like she died early on in the egg making.

Healthy hens that lay eggs like that just layed them early. Your hen died before her egg could be coated in full color. sorry for your loss

Is there anything that can be done if you see the hen having trouble laying? Anything to help it along or is there nothing you can do for the pool gal?

I am so sorry to hear this
