We bought this chicken at Family Farm and Home. Was told it was an Americauna, but from what I’m reading Americaunas don’t have feathers on their legs. Any ideas on what breed this? We ended up with 3 like this.
Could possibly be a Cochin or Brahma maybe??? Or a mix? Could also still be an Easter Egger because I think they sometimes use feather legged breeds like Marans for the mix. But it doesn’t look like one to me. It looks more like a Cochin or Brahma to me. Comb type would help differentiate.
Also feed stores tend to be wrong a lot and also put chicks back in the wrong bins quite often so you can get a totally different breed or gender than what it says.
Also, just for the record and for future reference, typically if it is being sold at a hatchery or feed store, it would not have been an Ameraucana or Araucana anyways. Especially spelled like that. Feed stores generally tend to falsely label Easter Eggers as those two breeds and spell it wrong, etc. Some do sell them as what they are, Easter Eggers, but it is very rare. I’m not sure why they choose to mislead people but they do.
The two breeds I mentioned have strict standards and only come in certain colors, etc. They also only lay blue eggs, not green or any of the other colors EEs can lay. And there’s other differences as well. But they are generally sold as the color that they are, like, for example “black Ameraucana”, “wheaten Am”, etc. so if it doesn’t mention a specific color, is spelled wrong, or is sold at a feed store, it is generally an Easter Egger.
NOW, that is not necessarily a bad thing. I personally, LOVE my Easter Eggers. I’ve had three and they are personally some of my favorite chickens. They come in a wide variety of colors and I love the different colored eggs and their wonderful personalities. But I just wanted to clarify so you could be aware. A lot of people have been deceived this way.
That said, I do think you have a Cochin or Brahma especially given this chick’s size but if you have a chance, you should absolutely get some Easter Eggers because they are amazing!!!
