For any eggs that appear soiled, I just take a moist paper towel and wipe them down. Try to avoid putting them in water as the shells are porous. If an egg is really, really bad, I just discard it.

I just read a post the other day that talked about preserving eggs and it said that unwashed eggs have the longest shelf life. I know that is not what your question is but I wouold keep that in mind though because it seems that we would wash only for the cosmetics of it.

It always seems throughout life that mother nature often has it more right than we do.

The eggs I give to neighbors I wash in warm water, let dry, then pour a little vegetable oil into my hands and rub it onto the shell. I then go back and wipe them down with a paper towel and put them in the refrigerator. The oil creates a barrier similar (but not s good as) to the bloom on unwashed eggs - I just can't give eggs to my neighbors which haven't been washed. For my family's use, I just keep those eggs on my counter, unwashed 'till I need them.
