Some one told me not to wash the eggs from my hens once i get them, and want to give them away. The reasoning was something about if i wash them it will help the eggs to get salminela. does anyone have any answers to this. I am brand new to the raising chickens idea; but doing the best i can!

some say to not wash them, as it removes some of the protective coating. But if they are dirty with poo- i wash mine lightly withs dish deterent and use them first.

I don't wash mine until I use them. The people who get my eggs know to wash before using/cracking, etc.

My grandparents had 1000's of laying hens and they told me to never wash them or you'll take the protective coating off. The egg is porous as it is and by washing the bloom off you open up the egg to outside bacteria coming through the pores. As the egg ages, the pores get larger.

Ditto to what Land of Lost Toys said. Eggs are porous and washing them will remove the protective coating thus reducing shelf life.

I am not sure if the video is still around but I saw one once where an egg had a tube mounted to it and it was filled with pressurized air. It was submerged under water and air bubbles formed on the outside.

As a side note I've heard that the eggshell is where chicks get their calcium as they develop.
