Washington and Oregon: So Far From Heritage-Breed Hatcheries...

Here in western Washington, I ordered day-old chicks successfully last year from Murray McMurray and am awaiting my order this year from Welp. Not that I wanted to have my babies shipped all the way from the Midwest, but there don't seem to be any hatcheries in Oregon or Washington that offer the heritage and rare breeds available elsewhere in the nation. Gamebirds, ducks, and geese, yes -- chickens, no.

Even the local feed stores and sellers on Craigslist don't have a big selection.

How do those of you who want day-old chicks get around this dilemma?

What hatchery has worked best for you for availability and to ship that distance? (I'm not into hatching eggs, just the day-old chicks.)

Are there hatcheries elsewhere in the West or even in Canada I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any feedback.

Not sure what your talking about as the
Monroe Farm Supply has everything you need and want.
These pix were taken a couple hours ago from their chick area.
The book indicates what kind availability and arrival dates with how many are coming.

Thank you, Mike! This is exactly the kind of resource I was looking for and, no, I hadn't found any reference to this store in my research.

We'll be calling them for the breeds we're looking for and taking a trip up there from Oly this weekend. Thanks!

There is also Phinney hatchery in Walla Walla, although I'm not sure what they hatch anymore.

Some people I worked with used them for meat birds last year with good results.

Ultasol, there's a poster on the Seattle CL who claims he bought out Phinney's stock when they went out of business. I think I'll give him a try, too, in my comparison-shopping. Thanks!

Phinney isn't out of business but I don't think they are raising as many breeds. I think they ship in their cornishX now, but I know that as of last fall they were still doing business.

I'm sure you'll want to get local, but I can tell you that Estes (out of Missouri) shipped my chicks out Wednesday and I had them all the way in Massachusetts by Thursday at 2. They shipped airmail although I only paid for priority. No DOA's and the ones the PO didn't steal are all thriving. They don't have a huge selection, but they have some fun stuff.
Good luck

What Mike said. Monroe is really nice. I saw a chick with really bad pasty butt, and I said something to the employee walking through, she scooped it right out to clean the little dear up.

Okay, how about the same for Oregon? Since I'm at the far south border here, Monroe is a bit too far....

My 6 pullets are, at 3 weeks, looking like 3 pullets and 3 cockerels, and I can't keep the cockerels, so I'm 3 hens short. Looking for a Welsummer, Dominique, Maran, Sussex, maybe a Millefleur ... and maybe a non-white Silkie, just because.
