Washington and Oregon: So Far From Heritage-Breed Hatcheries...

Our feedstore in Sequim, WA gets theirs from Privett Hatchery, which I was told was in Oregon. . . But according to Google it is in NM. Hmm. . . Really, if you want local hatchery birds, I'd go to Monroe if I were you.

It is pretty far from Oregon based people, but hey. . . I'm in WA and I have to drive at least 4 hours to pick up chicks from local breeders. And to me, it is worth it!

Monroe Farm & Feed gets their birds from Privett Hatchery as well. They also have birds from at least one local breeder that I know of! (and it's NOT me!!!) But yes, I'd recommend them too.

If you're looking for hatchery birds, I'd second Monroe Farm & Feed. Great selection and they keep their chicks well maintained. I've been to a few places where the conditions are just downright filthy and the birds in very poor shape.

The guy on CL I believe is in Stanwood. I've talked with him and he said he did buy out the hatchery that was over in eastern WA. Phinney was it? Nice guy but he doesn't know much about poultry and is just pretty much a hatchery in it for the $$.

If you do a Google Search for hatcheries, I think you'll find a site that lists all the hatcheries in the USA. It's been a couple of years but I remember seeing it.

Not sure where you are but there was a show last weekend in Monroe and there's a show coming up in April in Stevenson. Shows are great places to get some really nice birds and talk with the actual breeders.

Depending on what you're looking for, either I could help you or point you towards a couple of good breeders. Personally, I have some feedstore/hatchery varieties because I haven't found any breeders yet for them and I use them to keep my customers in eggs when my birds are in the breeding pens. It costs the same to feed a poor looking bird as it does a really good looking bird so I try to get breeder's birds when I can. There were a couple of breeds at the past show that had some production birds being shown and it was a stark visual example of the difference between the two.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,

I'm going to have to second the two seconds about Monroe Farm and Feed. I too highly recommend them for chicks and supplies.

I've been there quite a bit when I had the extra time to make the drive to monroe from everett, or was at the fair grounds for some reason. They are totally awesome and actually know something about their birds or will find someone who will help out. From my experiences, they even double check with the Cornish meat bird buyers that they are knowingly buying birds meant for meat! I'm sure that has prevented heart break on many a hands to not have to find out their cute pets were never meant to live a full life.

If I remember right, they were still family run as of two years ago.

Too bad Monroe doesn't have a website showing what they have in stock.
It is a bit of a drive without knowing what is going to be there & available!!

Welp orders will come via Privett in New Mexico. We ordered from Welp last year and I checked the shipping label, it was shipped from Privett's zip code and put on a plane in Texas to come to Sea Tac.

The chicks all survived and thrived despite it being June. They even survived that horrible hot spell we had. Quality was not bad for hatchery birds. They are now big, healthy girls. I like that the prices at Welp/Privett include shipping, it doesn't penalize those of us who live up here in the corner. Their website was easy to use as well.

It's funny this thread started, my DH and I were just discussing the lack of a good quality hertitage breeder in the NW.
