Just wanted to share that I just did my very first water belly drainage. Watched a video on YouTube. Only a needle, no syringe. Will update you In a week how the hen is going. Water is yellowish. I am planning to give her medications for the liver as I am not sure what else could cause it. She did have difficulty breathing too.

That sounds scary...keep us updated!

I have a hen with ascites and ordered the syringes(10ml 18 ga) off Amazon after watching a few videos on how to drain. My girl was regularly drained every 2-4 weeks for a bit, and now that she's out of lay for the winter her water retention has miraculously stopped or at least slowed immensely-she's running around like a sprightly young pullet after about a month and a half with no draining.

I call it her 'spa day' when I do drain her, I bring her in to our bathroom and she hangs out on a couple old towels and gets fed a few blueberries(her favorite snack). I'm lucky because she is our friendly and sweet chicken(easter egger) and doesn't mind being handled.

I'm hoping you have good results with it! I have had great results with regular draining, it's been 8 months since we started and she seems to be doing very well! So it goes.
