I was in a rush and bought what I thought was a usual, black rubber water bucket.
I realized it had a warning like "California says this might cause cancer or reproductive harm"
It has a chemical stink.
What the heck? Are these different than the water buckets I've been buying for 20 years?

I see that other people put reviews of this product as "it stinks".
But what else would you use besides a robber bowl in a cold climate where you have to dislodge the ice every day?

Other people do say that the stink dissipates.

I wonder if something changed?

Is it a prop 65 warning?

Those warnings are on everything and California is the only state that requires them. You can even find them on balsamic vinegar. My microwave has the warning on it. From what I understand it’s a warning label for chemicals that COULD pose a potential birth defect or cancer risk in high doses. Most of these labels are slapped onto ANYTHING that contains that chemical even in the tiniest amount that wouldn’t cause any harm. Again don’t quote me, but I’m pretty certain this is what it’s about. And note, California is the ONLY state in the entire country that requires this label. It wouldn’t exist if they didn’t need it for all products sold in the state.

I don’t know about the smell but my 5 gallon buckets from the hardware store always have a plasticy smell when I first buy them.
