Water Glassing - Has anyone tried this?

We water glass our eggs. It works fantastically well for fresh eggs all winter. Remember not to wash your eggs before you put them in, and if any of your eggs crack you'll have to replace all the liquids. If you boil them after you water glass them they tend to crack, and push out of the shell, but they don't taste any different, and fry up, and scramble just like normal eggs.

I read an article about this a few weeks ago but the article called for Sodium Silicate. I ordered the Sodium Silicate and now I can't find the article to see if the preparation is the same as this video but I do remember that it called for eggs no more than 24 hours old. Also when I received the Sodium Silicate, it came in liquid form. Is Sodium Silicate and the Pickling Lime she is talking about, the same? Who has more information they can share about this? Thank you.

I'm not sure on either of those two formulas. We use hydrogenated lime, (you can usually find it at your local hardware, or lawn and garden store. The formula we use is 1 oz (by weight, not volume) hydrogenated lime to 1 quart of water.

My Duck Bill wants to know: The eggs his 10 Saxony girls give are often bespeckle with muck (Duck Poo), mud, feathers, and straw (etc.). When we say "wash" do we mean not at all, or is a light rinse ok do you think?
