Waterers again -

I think I'm going to just chuck my big 3-gallon waterer (pictured here: http://www.mypetchicken.com/Feed_and_Feed_Supplies-3_Gallon_Hanging_Plastic_Waterer-P29.aspx ) which is currently inside their coop/tractor...

And just use these inside the coop as well as outside ( http://www.redoakgamebirds.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=94 )

The big waterer inside the coop gets filthy so quickly that the chickens hardly use it. On the other hand, I've been using the "pop bottle" waterers out in their run very successfully - they stay pretty clean and I can put out a bottle of frozen water for them on these 95* days, which they seem to like. I have a very small flock, so they won't go through more than 1/2 gallon per day, and much less inside the coop since they only sleep and eat in there.

Any concerns or ideas I haven't considered?

eta: the 3-gallon waterer actually works very well, it's just so big and cumbersome to use (especially in my small chicken tractor), irritating to clean and refill constantly, and gets murky too quickly.

I used to use those soda bottle waterers for all my 4-H bantam trios and liked them very much. You could just add an extra waterer on really hot days.
In the winter they freeze really quickly, if you live somewhere where that is an issue.

I have had this same proablem not to long ago!

I have several chickens dived into 3 pens right now. I got tired of the hassle of carying water and cleaning the waterers.
Yes I still have to clean the waterers out once a week but not as often. I have full size chickens. For bantams or quail that soda pop water will work if you do not have many. The concept is good but the delivery system may need to be changed to fit you better.

We are using an auto waterer we found online. We first saw it on BYC. Someone had found one at Wal Mart and said they loved it. We couldn't find it at Wal Mart or any where in the area so we ordered it online for $14.99. It keeps fresh water in the bowl all the time and never needs to be changed. You just hook a hose up to it and it fills when the level drops past a certain point. The only thing we modified was to put a roof over it so the girls couldn't get up on it and poop in it. They love it and so do we! Our water problems are solved!!!!

what i did i took a old paint bucket.Dilled holes close to the bottom the size of a pencil.The bucket lid had a cap you can take of.its setting in a cat litter box. So when i fill it up I take old pencil to close the holes in the bottom , then i take the top off and fill every thing up including the litter box.Put the cap on, and pull the pencils out and it last almost a week.I have seen them were people just druills hole at the top and turns it over.I,m disable I can't pick up 10ibs so i make every thing easy for me This is my feeder.
