My rhode island reds just started laying about 2 weeks ago. I have 8 that are mature enough to start laying. Every day it seems another hen is starting to lay (although I cannot tell who is laying as they all look alike!!) This morning I found a very soft and watery egg lying next to a brown egg with white coloring throughout. I've never seen this before. All my other eggs have come out fine. What does it mean when the egg is very watery? Is the one lying next to it with white coloring mixed into the brown coloring alright? Do you think they came from the same chicken? Any feedback is appreciated.

The eggs that has white and brown is OK.My RIR lay some like that very often. The runny soft shelled one can be numerous things, are you giving them oyster shell at all times to eat when needed.

I've been feeding them the egg laying feed from the feed store. Do I need to enhance this feed with additional protein? All my other eggs (over 2 dozen thus far) have come out with very strong shells.

I've only been giving them egg laying feed from the feed store. Should I ask for additional oyster shells to add to feed? I've had about 2 dozen other eggs and they've all had strong shells.

I have the same thing, but it is always the same hen. The egg is in a soft little bag instead of a shell.
Nice egg otherwise.
Every one eats the same food, why does this one hen do this?
Does anyone know?

I've heard that some hens it's hereditary that they will always lay soft shell eggs.As far as her if you plan on breeding her for baby chicks,I also heard that you should not use her eggs because it will be passed on as well.
