I'm so glad things seem to be looking better (and that you were able to get to the vet - nice that they didnt charge you)! Heat can be VERY stressful on chickens so it can definitely cause some concerns. So, I sat and observed the girls yesterday to see who had runny poops. My olive Egger had a bad one, and wouldn't you know it, my craziest chicken who won't let me touch her had two. My Sussex, who had bad runny poops last week, had a normal one.
So made a vet appointment for crazy Olivia, enlisted my husband to man the gate, went out and grabbed her after I tossed mealworms on the ground. She screamed and carried on like I was electrocuting her.
I drove her to the vet and waited with her for the vet tech. When the woman came on, Olivia had a very normal poop. She also had a major heart attack when a cat wandered in, so the tech concluded she was fine. We decided it's the heat, maybe change of feed.
I feel like an idiot, but I did get to ask a lot of questions, and there was no charge.
Olivia said I would never get another blue egg from her again. But she seems to be over it, because a few hours later she had laid one, and she didn't run away when I walked in the run.
Thanks again for your help for this newbie!
I would still lay off the extra foods (treats/kitchen or garden scraps/etc.) at least until the temps cool a bit. Treats and extra foods can throw off the nutritional balance of the chicken feed, so it may be a good idea to just stick to chicken feed and water for a bit until the weather improves. I might also add an electrolyte and probiotic supplement to one waterer (and also have a plain waterer available). That should help with any dehydration and also support the gut during the stress of the heat!
