Hello all! I've been stalking the forum for awhile reading and learning a lot! I finally decided to not be lazy and register

I'm not completely new to caring for chickens my parents have a small flock of mixed breeds for eggs. I go home several times a year to help out with things and I often get assigned "chicken duty" when my recently disabled Dad isn't up to it. Right now I'm researching and hunting around for chicks to start my own backyard flock of bantams.
I love animals and my husband thinks I'm crazy for my devotion, matter of fact he's the only reason I haven't adopted 10 dogs and 20 cats or something like that lol

Right now I'm a proud momma to a 18 month old crazy little boy named Finn he loves animals just like his momma.

I also have a 7 yr old Great Pyrenees/Husky mix named Texas (I named him that when I lived in Kentucky, I never thought I'd live in Texas!),
A 2 yr old black and cream German shepherd named Bear, a 4 year old Maltese named Cricket and a 1 year old tortie Persian named Temperance.

I'm pretty knowledgeable about dogs if anyone needs any advice on breeds or training but I'm still a newbie when it comes to chickens. I'm pretty excited about learning more though!
I'm looking into silkies from a breeder and also seriously considering some Lavender Ameraucanas from another breeder. I can't decide all the breeds of bantams are so tempting! I've heard silkies don't lay a lot of eggs, I want a good looking and docile/friendly breed that might produce pretty well since eventually I'd like to be eating their eggs, Any recommendations?

I'm happy to be here, looking forward to participating in the forum!

The bantam Ameraucanas are fun, but can be fairly "assertive" and may not do well with more docile breeds like Silkies. When my silkie is laying, she lays every day, but she goes broody so often, she probably only lays about 8 weeks out of the year. Silkies are well known for their broodiness. There are tons of really awesome bantams out there, a "bantam assortment" from a hatchery might be fun! Of course, you'll end up with a few roos to rehome probably, as bantams from a hatchery generally come as "straight run".

This is a great community here, and I'm sure there will be lots of people ready to give you their opinions on what you should get!!

How does your silkie do with the ameraucanas you have? Or do you keep them seperate? I know for sure I want a couple silkies because of my kiddo that was an easy decision

The rest I'll take the time to figure out lol no sense rushing a good thing right?

I do keep her in the Ameraucana coop, but she's been in with them since they were babies. The Am girls would probably beat her up, but the roo is really protective of her.
