We have some new chicks and two are a bit older than the other 5. These two are SilverWyandottes. They are probably about 3-4 weeks old. I bought them at the farm store, so I don't know. They were much bigger than my day old chickies, so I think they had at least a week or so on them.

Anyway - one of them is bigger than the other (growing faster), has thicker legs, and it's comb is developing more already. He/She is also more 'aggressive' (not mean, just assertive, I guess).

Is it way to soon to tell?? I'll try to get a picture of him/her.

I think you're right on the age. The comb looks to be a single rather than rose on this one and has more color than I'd expect at this point BUT it's still too early to say whether it's growing and that's really the tell. Three more weeks and you'll either see a much bigger comb (male) or it will be unchanged (likely female). At this point, it's a guess.

I will say that I have a pullet that was a moose at this age. Huge legs and feet, blocky head, tall and upright. But, she was easily identified by her color pattern as female. Her proportions evened out with the rest by 7 weeks (though she still has a big head...) She was just a fast grower. My theory is that dominant chicks eat more.

That's a good theory and makes sense. One of my black sex links just seems huge compared to the other 5 chicks and I *know* they are basically the same ages. She (and I'm 99.9% positive "she" b/c she's a sex link) is one jerk of a bird. She'll jump on top of the other chicks, doesn't peck them, just will hop at them and get everyone worked up. I'm thinking it's just because they are running out of room.

Yes it's too early to tell if its a roo or not. I WISH there were easy ways that we could no for sure, waiting is driving me nuts.

Thanks for your input! I'm hoping she really is a SHE, since we only have 7chicks. :) Time will tell!
