Ways to prevent frostbite other than Vaseline?

We don't have any on hand and don't buy petroleum products like Vaseline. Would something else work? Like a ointment based with beeswax work?

you can try bag balm...it really works better actually, we use on it cattle.

there really is only one way to prevent frostbite, add ventilation....without that, you will get frostbite...period.

My best guess is shortening. It's used on baby bums as a moisture barrier, so why not combs?
