Hi,

We are more then half done building a coop! We have done lots of research but still feel nervous as we have zero experience with chickens! We are in northern NJ and would love the opportunity to visit a farm to discuss raising chickens, and breeds and what would work best in our situation. We have a 4x4 elevated coop with a 4x12 run (that's the part that needs to be complete this weekend!). We are thinking between 3-5 layers depending on breed/size. Any advise on where we should go?

Thank you!

Hello, Christine, welcome to BYC. Much of poultry raising is just common sense and good husbandry. The answers to any questions can be found in the forums. Good luck.

If you haven't already, you might want to try posting on your state thread. Maybe you can find someone local that breeds chickens or fellow NJ members that can give you helpful tips:

x2 on checking out the Learning Center too. There are a lot of really informative articles there.

Good luck!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breed is best for you. Just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Even if you don't purchase your birds from Murray, the "chick selector" is still a valuable tool. X3 on our Learning Center; if you haven't done so already, definitely check it out at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.
