We lost our lovely buff plymouth rock to a hawk last year. So after alot of research, discussion, and prayer, we decided to adopt Rusty, our French Copper Maran rooster!

Rusty started crowing a few weeks ago and doesnt crow until we open up the coop around 7:30 a.m.! Of course then he makes up for the delay by crowing about 20 times in a row! He is protective of his girls and will ALWAYS walk away if they want what he eats.

He also is calm around us and my husband and him have a male comraderie.

I realize he may still turn into a jerk, so please dont fill the replies with that possibility. I just wanted to crow a bit about Rusty and hope others share POSITIVE stories about their roosters as well.

Your boy is beautiful! His colors are stunning. ♥ Depending on how old he is, he might already be through his jack-ass puberty stage and is just being the gentleman that comes with age and experience that most roosters get when they deal with hens a lot.

I lost my boy to a dog attack this week and he was the BEST boy. A BLRW with a straight comb (I didn't mind - I'm just breeding for my backyard flock and I didn't want him to be killed for imperfect genetics) and I'm honestly surprised with his temperament! Eventually my roosters always turned a little aggressive with me but he was the kindest, best boy. Always ran to me for treats first and followed me super closely. I could tell him, "Okay, come on." and he'd sort of impatiently stomp his feet and stand super close to me while I was opening their treat bin before running to share the treats with his girls. He *always* gave them first pick before taking some for himself. I'm REALLY hoping the eggs I have in the incubator share his personality as I'd like a rooster with his disposition again.

I am so sorry you lost your sweet rooster. :( I know how hard it is. I hope one of your babies is just as sweet. Thank you for sharing

This is little red, a heritage Rhode island red. He was hatched as a school project so he was handled often. When we got him at about a month old, he was already coming when called. We gave him his name and he learned it after a few days of use. He lived in our grow out coop that we call the chick magnet for a few months with some slightly younger chicks. But they all out grew it. So we moved them into the main flock. But he was so timid that all the hens and other roosters started to harass him, so we had no choice but to put him back in the chick magnet with our youngest (at the time) chicks. He didn't care that they were so much younger then him and let the half feathered chicks climb all over him. They used him like a momma heating pad at night and even slept on his back. He became their protector. But as he started to reach his more adult size, we realized he started to get to big to easily go through the door to outside the sheltered coop part. So we took him out to start integrating him into the flock again. He was in a crate at night, and allowed to free range with the flock during the day. But he always stays close to the chick magnet. Finally, tonight, the main flock (after removing the other young roos we didn't want) let him stay in the coop with them tonight. Albeit not on the roost with them yet. We want to possibly have him take over for our older main rooster big red.

Lovely cockerel! 😊 V handsome. We hatched some chicken about a year ago and I think 5/7 turned out to be cockerels!😆 They were a light sussex, a welsummer (my favourite) and 3 buff sussex. It was hilarious to watch them all come running when you walked the the shed where the treats were kept 🤣. Have fun with your cockerel because in my opinion if they are friendly they stick by you and are more fun to watch than hens.

I agree. He always tries to run out the gate to get over to us.
