Hello fellow chicken keepers! I'm a new chicken mama and have realized I should have studied up more before taking the leap. But I will do my intro here and then run over to the Emergencies section and post there....
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We picked up our first group of "pullets" from a local man we met at the farmer's market on July 31. They were a mixed flock, 7 total, and we were told they were about 8 weeks old at the time. The following Sunday we drove out to another farm and picked up a group of 11 week old Easter Eggers that seemed to be better taken care of than our first group. This group had 2 EE cockerels, 5 EE hens and a mixed Silkie. At the time, we didn't know anything about quarantining and just added them to the others.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
About 2 weeks ago, I ended up culling one of the younger ones because she just wasn't thriving. So we now have 12 hens and 2 roosters...maybe. Could be more roosters, LoL
(3) What breeds do you have?
Easter Eggers for sure, a mixed Silkie, a dominecker or barred rock, a couple of ISA Browns (so I was told) and the rest are barnyard mixes.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I hadn't realized chickens are so personable. We started with chickens to become more self-sufficient.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Don't really have any hobbies.. We are in our 8th year of homeschooling our teens, a 16 and 14 year old. I'm a nurse but decided to stay home to homeschool and my husband is counting the days before he can retire from his civilian job. We have 4 big dogs, 2 of which seem to want to eat our chickens, LoL
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
When the chickens started showing signs of illness I googled and came across posts from BYC. I really wanted to find some likeminded folks to share with and decided this would be the place.
