Have you raised a baby? You are in for such a treat!

It's late for over here too. Typically the breeding shed closes mid june. We get started the end of January with late babies arriving by the 1st week of July. This is the time of year the 80 + weanlings start leaving

Of course being an Alabama bred should present weather advantages to getting such a late start.

She is a doll, congratulations.

Lovey is out of my "hard luck" mare. Sweetie aborted in 2005, reabsorbed in 2006, and missed entirely (I thought!) in 2007. I thought her breeding days were over. That's why she was running with my then 2-yo stallion Rusty last fall. I had no idea she was in foal until early last week when she suddenly started to develop a belly. I was thinking maybe this coming spring she might finally get to have a foal again.

HA!

I opened the stall door on Friday morning and found Lovey asleep in the shavings! I remember thinking, "There's a baby in there." I closed the stall door and said out loud, "Nah. I'm just imagining there's a baby in there." So I opened the door again and, sure enough, there really was a baby in there!

Fortunately I live in Alabama so the winters are relatively mild. But I've raised foals dropped in January and February in Colorado at 8000 ft, so I'm not really worried about Lovey dealing with the winter here.

I'm just so glad to finally have her! I have pictures of both her mother and her father--oh and her grandmother, too--on the front page of my website, if you'd like to see them too.

I'm still floating. Deep down I never really thought Sweetie would have another foal. I'm going to register her as "A Rusty Surprise."

when it's a mare you REALLY want a baby out of, doesn't matter what day it is born. Any birthday is a good birthday for a hard to get bred mare. Congratulations! How's the mare bred?

A couple of years ago I got the same surprise one morning. I started throwing hay in the receiving barn and did a double take when I opened her gate. One of the ship-in's foaled 6 weeks early...turned out we had bad info on her, the expected foaling date was wrong on her ppwk. She wasn't even due to be rotated to the foaling barn for another month. She had only been with us for a few days and showed none of the classic impending birth signs.

This is SO true! She's a NN triple on Impressive and Rusty is NN as well--Zippo Pine Taylor on top and an Impressive daughter on the bottom. Lovey is his first foal, altho we are expecting 3 others in the spring. She is already such a sweetheart and soooo athletic!

Thanks, everyone, for all your kind words. I'm STILL ready to bust I'm so excited over her.
