I have been wanting pheasants for awhile now. I just didn’t think it would happen so soon. We were at a local livestock auction when there was a female red golden pheasant. I commented how cute she was and next thing I know my husband was bidding on her. We got her for $15. I do not know how old she is. We are planning on trying to get a male and possibly another female. We already have ducks and I have read that it is best not to house them together.

I am in research mode because like I said I didn’t think it would happen so soon. What can they eat and not eat? Are there any birds that they can be housed with? We have also considered peafowl but that will be awhile.

We aren’t sure she has had much human contact. She is very skittish. We want to try and get her more tamed. Would hand feeding her help with that?

Anything else you can tell me about them or any links you can direct me too would be great.

You'll want to feed her (and any others) you get a complete and balanced feed of at least 24% protein. Greens are also important, kale, lettuce, celery, pieces of grass, if they don't have access to greens in their enclosure. Also BOSS and mealworms are good for treats but don't feed them too much, as it puts a lot of fat on them and lowers the overall protein intake.

If they are already flighty, it will be harder to tame them to hand feeding but with patience it can be obtained, especially if you use mealworms or BOSS.
