We have chickens

:frow Welcome from New Orleans. How many chicks do you have? What breeds did you get? How big of a coop and/or run are you planning to build? I wish to warn you about "chicken math". We had 10 chickens, one night one was missing, we looked and looked, night after night and she was just gone. The odd thing was that the rooster didn't seem concerned. Well a couple of weeks ago my husband saw her one morning, then we couldn't. find her again. Two nights later, at about 11:30 at night I thought I heard her cluck and I thought I heard Peeps. I went outside with a flashlight, only to find she had been brooding under the house. We had looked under there repeatedly to no avail. So Chicken Math is 1 rooster + 1 hen = 25 chickens. She hatched 15 chicks.
Always build your coop and run much bigger than you think you will need. Good luck, you have joined a fun site, enjoy.
6 Buff Orpington Chicks. Got them from TSC. Supposed to be all hens. Our run / pen size is 15x12.5. Coop is an old dog box modified with a nesting box on the side roughly 48"x42"x48" + the nesting box.

How do I tell and when?
I would post photos at around 8 to 10 weeks. Post a closeup, front shot, and side view of the face. Post one of the tail feathers from the side and above, and a full body shot or two. The more pictures you Post, the easier it will be for others to identify the gender.
If all else fails, wait for an egg or a crow.
Seriously, just enjoy your chick, and don't worry too much. The odds are 85 to 90% that it is a female. I bought many hatchery chicks, direct and from Tractor Supply. At least 50, over the years, and only one was incorrectly sexed.
