So sorry to hear this is fairly common...we are new to keeping chickens and we love our ladies like we never knew we could. Last week, we found one of our year old reds dead in our backyard. It had been a day, day and a half before we found her, but she had some scratches on her belly....may or may not have caused death, we don't know. Today, we found another of our ladies, inside the coop and looks completely okay, but dead. I'm so sad. She was definitely one of our faves and so friendly and sweet and curious. We let them run the backyard. I want to understand so I can better protect my ladies. I live in Alaska, so we don't have the heat issue, certainly not the passed couple of days anyway. I'm sure it's not heat....what could it be? This is harder than I thought and just trying to find community and understanding and knowledge. You guys probably can't help, but at least we aren't alone. How can they seem fine one day and dead the next?

I'm sorry for your loss. We just recently lost some and it's hard. Where is Alaska are you? I just moved from Kodiak to Juneau last year.
