we are first time silkie chic parents. We brought 5 of them home 3 weeks ago. All were around 3 weeks old when we bought them.

Since day one all have been extremely active and got along. No outcasts. Last night out of nowhere, one went to the side and stayed to itself. Not one symptom of anything. This morning it was limp and laying on it side. Within 30 minutes it had passed away.

Now we are extremely concerned about the other babies. We have completely sanitized the chics surroundings. It’s food and water.

We were told to give them apple cider vinegar.

Any suggestions?

We also had used on old window screen to put atop our make shift coop for the time being. Maybe an old paint chip flakes off when we put it across. Would that effect it?

Welcome to BYC, and so sorry that you lost the chick. Did the chick have a swollen crop or any droppings stuck to it’s vent or bottom? Did they come from a breeder or a feed store? Did they all seem to be eating and drinking? Is there a heat lamp or a heat source? What is the temperature in the brooder on the floor in the warmest spot? Any pictures of your setup or more details are welcome. I would make sure all chicks are drinking and eating. Check vents for pasty butt. Crops are in the upper right chest, and since chicks eat all the time, they may have some food in them. Occasionally a chick will eat bedding and get a crop impaction.
